Inwood Butterfly Sanctuary Organizational Partnerships

New York Restoration Project

Dos Amigos School in the Square

New York Restoration Project

The Gardens for the City (GFTC) program’s mission is to work with community partners to create and provide gardens and other green spaces to low-income and/or underserved communities throughout New York City that will contribute to the environmental well-being of these communities and those who live there.

GFTC’s goal is to mitigate disparities that prevent these communities from accessing and utilizing green spaces and promote equity and social justice in areas that are often overlooked by these opportunities.

Inwood Butterfly Sanctuary has applied for GFTC funds for the Dos Amigos Elementary School nature learning programs for 2025.

Partnership for Parks

Dos Amigos School in the Square

New York Restoration Project

Partnerships for Parks is a unique public-private partnership between City Parks Foundation and NYC Parks that supports and champions neighborhood volunteers by providing the tools needed to advocate and care for neighborhood parks and green spaces. The PFP equips people, organizations, and government with the necessary skills and resources to transform their spaces into dynamic community assets.

The Partnerships for Parks has been the primary institutional resource for the Inwood Butterfly Sanctuary through the Grassroots Green Fund Award since 2021 with the "Tiny Miracles: Saving an Endangered Butterfly Species to Save Ourselves" program.

Dos Amigos School in the Square

Dos Amigos School in the Square

Dos Amigos is a tuition-free public charter school in New York City. The Inwood Butterfly has launched a nature-learning program, conducting nature walks and butterfly citizen sciences. The Inwood Butterfly has applied to NYRP's Gardens for the City PROGRAM. The New York Restoration Project will help provide tools and resources to maintain butterfly conservation and waystation at Dos Amigos at School in the Square .

Friends of Inwood Hill Park

The Inwood Butterfly Sanctuary has has close connections, membership overlap and common interest with Friends of Inwood Hill Park, a sister organization dedicated to native species conservation, creating monarch butterfly waystations as we collaborate on habitat restoration, native species planting and invasive species removal in designated areas in the 150 acres of original growth forest of Inwood Hill Park.

RING Garden

Butterflies in the Garden

RING's fragrant flowers have long attracted butterflies. The annual Butterfly Festival celebrated these beautiful creatures, with up to 10 species spotted. However, pesticide use has led to a decline in butterfly sightings in Manhattan.

The Inwood Butterfly Sanctuary is working to create a monarch waystation and raise monarch butterflies in the garden and support the migratory population through Wings Without Borders program.

Political Action at work Saving Monarch Butterflies in NYC!

NYC DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH Ashwin Vasan, Commissioner Office of Vector Surveilance and Control

The NYC  Health  Department only gave us 4 days notice (over a weekend) that they planned to do aerial spraying of pesticides in the neighborhood with toxic chemicals known to cause mortality in caterpillar and butterfly populations.
With the intervention of our good friend and supporter, NYS Senator Robert Jackson, we were able to persuade NYC not to spray within 1,000 feet of this environmentally sensitive area:

"You  requested that we maintain a distance of 1,000 feet from the Inwood  Butterfly Sanctuary during the spraying. Please rest assured that the  Health Department avoided this location.
Thank you for the work you do to protect butterflies."

Waheed I Bajwa, Ph.D., MPhil, FRES  Executive Director, Office of Vector Surveillance and Control  NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
