Wings Without Borders ● Our Worlds United By Butterflies

The Butterfly Experience

Inwood Butterfly Sanctuary offers a program called "The Butterfly Experience," which involves bringing portable butterfly enclosures to schools, parks, and open spaces around Northern Manhattan. This program provides a unique opportunity for the community to interact directly with living monarch butterflies, learn about their life cycle, and understand the importance of their conservation. This initiative exemplifies the sanctuary's commitment to community engagement and education, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for the monarch's well-being across its migratory path that we share with our Canadian and Mexican neighbors. We create intimate, up-close and personal experiences that foster an enduring empathy for endangered species and the environment.

A Network of Monarch Butterfly Waystations

The Inwood Butterfly Sanctuary creates and maintains monarch waystations (registered with Monarch Watch, a specialized garden spaces that provide resources like milkweed, host plants and nectar-rich flowers to support monarch butterflies during their migration. The waystation serves as a tangible demonstration of the local community's role in providing essential habitat for monarchs along their migratory journey, connecting Inwood to the larger continental network of monarch conservation efforts, Wings Without Borders.

Advocacy and Partnerships for Habitat Restoration

The Inwood Butterfly Sanctuary actively advocates for the protection and restoration of monarch butterfly habitat in the local community and beyond. We have launched petitions to stop the destruction of milkweed, a crucial host plant for monarchs, and partnered with organizations like Friends of Inwood Hill Park and the New York Restoration Project to create and maintain pollinator gardens that support monarch butterflies and other pollinators. These efforts illustrate the sanctuary's understanding of the interconnectedness of ecosystems along the monarch's migratory route, working to create a network of healthy habitats without borders that can support the butterfly's survival across its vast journey.
